iPhone 2.0.1 IPSW Download and PwnageTool 2.0.2

Post by: Daniel on August 9th, 2008 | File Under Uncategorized

We reported a couple of days ago that the PwnageTool 2.0.2 tool would be available very soon and that happened yesterday. Just as the DevTeam made the latest PwnageTool available in the sparkle update system, they noticed a major bug.

This bug was reported to only happen on an Intel iMac running Leopard, the PwnageTool 2.0.2 was then pulled from the sparkle update system.

So with the confusion of finding the iPhone 2.0.1 IPSW download well on the way moments after, things got confusing for many wanting to jailbreak their iPhone 2.01 firmware.

You can now download the PwnageTool 2.0.2 tool on a few different mirrors, these include zippy share.

You should also be aware that if you do download the PwnageTool_2.0.2.tbz file from other mirrors then you could end up getting a problem. The iphone-dev site has the mirrors they recommend and also say to check the SHA1 sum if getting elsewhere.

Let us know your experiences with PwnageTool 2.0.2 in the comments. You can view other iPhone 3G news here.

Hands-on: GIGABYTE GA MA78GM S2H 780G Motherboard

Post by: Daniel on August 9th, 2008 | File Under Uncategorized

This is the GIGABYTE GA MA78GM S2H 780G motherboard, and the performance is on par with 780G boards, but its ability to overclock makes it a much better option for a HTPC with some kick. HDMI, eSATA and FireWire make this the ultimate HTPC board.

Tweak Town have given this motherboard a full hands-on review over 13 pages, and in their final thoughts they said, “Overall, the 780G chipset is extremely impressive; that much is certain. However, it’s usually put into cut-down boards using the Micro-ATX format. While this makes for a great HTPC, some of the potential of the 780G chipset is left unused.

GIGABYTE has done a fantastic job with this board. While it’s aimed at the HTPC users and even the office environments, it still has a bit of kick in it in regards to overclocking.

While it’s not able to push the boundaries like that of Core 2, it’s still able to give the AMD platform a kick in the pants and we know that AMD is no where near as easy to overclock as Intel since there are more tweaks needed to get them to run in a stable fashion”.

Update: Research In Motion vs Apple 3G iPhone

Post by: Daniel on August 9th, 2008 | File Under Uncategorized

Two weeks before the new Apple (AAPL) 3G iPhone was released, a ChangeWave consumer survey showed it was likely to have a tsunami-like impact on the smart phone market. But what does that mean for current market share leader Research In Motion (RIMM)?

The ChangeWave consumer survey showed the 3G iPhone catapulting Apple into the lead in terms of planned consumer smart phone purchases for the next 90 days. Note that RIM remains the leader among current smart phone owners in the consumer market, and RIM holds a huge lead in the corporate market.

Yet despite its current lead in both markets, RIM isn’t taking the Apple 3G challenge lying down. The Canadian manufacturer has multiple plans in motion to counter Apple’s momentum among consumers, including an already announced new product release (the Bold) and two likely additional product releases (the Thunder and Kickstart).

To get a sense of the market potential for RIM’s new smart phone arsenal, ChangeWave surveyed 3,567 consumers on their reaction to the new RIM counteroffensive. The survey was conducted in the aftermath of the Apple 3G announcement (June 17-23), but before the new iPhone model was released.

Preparing For Multiple Battles - Consumer respondents were presented a brief description containing key features of RIM’s new smart phone models, along with a follow-up question asking them how likely they were to buy each model if and when it becomes available.

The survey found the new RIM releases each showing considerable potential among consumers once they actually get into the marketplace.

A total of 4% of respondents report they’re Very Likely to buy the new RIM/BlackBerry Bold when it becomes available. Another 13% are Somewhat Likely.

Slightly less positive but nonetheless significant, 2% of respondents say they’re Very Likely to buy a RIM/BlackBerry Thunder when available. A total of 13% are Somewhat Likely.
Another 2% say they’re Very Likely to buy a RIM/BlackBerry Kickstart when it becomes available, and 11% are Somewhat Likely.

“These results show consumers hungry for all varieties of BlackBerry,” said Tobin Smith, founder of ChangeWave Research and editor of ChangeWave Investing, who added, “it appears like when it comes to the BlackBerry, the adage ‘if you build it, they will come,’ certainly holds true.”

The strength of these early survey results on the demand for RIM’s new products points to a potentially powerful counteroffensive to Apple’s 3G iPhone, according to Smith. “The real losers in this smart phone battle will most likely be the second-tier players, who could find themselves increasingly pushed to the sidelines as the two Goliaths battle for market dominance.”

To find out which manufacturers are most at risk because of the RIM counteroffensive, ChangeWave looked at the impact of the new RIM releases on the rest of the smart phone industry.

The survey found that current RIM customers are two-to-three times more likely to buy the new RIM models than the customers of other manufacturers. The survey also found that the new RIM releases have a significant potential to lure away customers from other manufacturers – with Palm (PALM), Motorola (MOT) and Samsung the most vulnerable.

Apple customers, on the other hand, appear least likely to buy any of the new RIM phones.

Philips CX50 CompactXtreme handheld ultrasound system

Post by: Daniel on August 9th, 2008 | File Under Uncategorized

Philips introduces the CX50 CompactXtreme – the first handheld ultrasound system to combine the image quality of traditional scanning equipment with portability, saving both clinicians’ time and improving patient care.

Clinicians have previously relied on a portable ultrasound to help investigate potential problems for very ill patients who cannot be moved. However, frequently the quality of the image may not be as reliable as those from static machines, so doctors have had to re-examine patients in order to confirm a diagnosis.

But with the CX50, clinicians now have a portable device that includes PureWave, a technology unique to Philips and the biggest breakthrough in its field in 40 years. With its uniform crystals, it provides greater bandwidth and twice the efficiency of conventional technology, resulting in pristine images for doctors in the operating room or at the patient’s bedside. It is of particular benefit for difficult-to-image patients such as the obese, in whom excess fat can act as a fog to ultrasound waves and so hamper diagnosis.

The device has a 15 inch high resolution monitor so clinicians can clearly see images wherever they are and the fast start-up system allows them to begin studies instantly. With its one-button controls placed logically on the control panel, it has also been designed to be simple and efficient for staff to use.

Tissue Specific Imaging in the CX50 automatically adjusts to match the examination required for the patient with the touch of a button. During the scan the operator can also make adjustments so they can enhance key details, so cutting down exam times and reducing the need for repeat studies. Wireless DICOM also allows data to be sent directly to/from the device, ensuring clinicians can access information wherever they need it.

The CX50 also comes with other groundbreaking features, such as a built-in handle and battery. The device can also be transported on a compact trolley small enough to fit in the tightest corners of a ward or even in its own carry case to other facilities.

Doctors are welcoming the arrival of the new CX50 as it will mean they can make quick and confident diagnoses wherever their patients need them.

Key Benefits/Features:

  • Premium level image quality regardless of patient difficulty thanks to Philips PureWave and XRES technologies
  • Breakthrough PureWave technology, the biggest breakthrough in piezoelectric transducer technology in 40 years, provides a radical leap forward in compact image quality
  • Fast start-up time and wireless DICOM enables data to be sent directly to/from the cart, providing flexibility when connecting to PACS
  • Broadband capabilities of a digital beamformer, enabling complete tissue signatures to be captured, preserved and displayed
  • Wide range of portability options including a cart specifically designed for the system for effortless maneuverability throughout the hospital
  • Fully functional laptop-sized system with built-in handle and battery for quick responses
  • Wheeled travel case for easy mobility to remote areas such as satellite clinics or rural offices
  • Approximately 14 x 14 x 2.5 inches including handle, and weighs about 13 pounds
  • The CX50 CompactXtreme offers breakthrough workflow solutions, including:
  • Wide range of QLAB tools for quantification and assessment of cardiac anatomy and functions
  • iSCAN technology that automatically samples data for a new level of 2D and Doppler optimization with a single button
  • Tissue Motion Quantification with speckle tracking technology, enabling the analysis of trans-myocardial mechanics without tissue
  • Doppler imaging angle dependency limitations
  • Native acoustic data that can be stored, enabling clinicians to adjust virtually all scanning parameters on single images, clips or stored 2D and Doppler data
  • 15” high-resolution monitor for optimal viewing in difficult portable environments

BBC sorry after around 250 children’s details lost

Post by: Daniel on August 9th, 2008 | File Under Uncategorized

It’s no small thing when children’s personal details go missing in any situation and just this happened with around 250 children’s details when they took part in a BBC TV show.

The BBC has now apologized after the children’s details were thought to be stolen from a computer memory stick. This was left in a vehicle belonging to the firm that is making the show (Objective Productions).

The new show was called Gastronuts; it’s being made for eight to 12-year-olds and the details stolen were from children who applied to take part in the TV show.

The parents of these children were informed by Richard Deverell (BBC children’s controller) that dates of birth, mobile phone numbers, addresses and names had gone missing.

Richard Deverell had this to say, “I offer you my sincere apologies and my assurances that we are taking all action possible to mitigate the consequences of this.”
